We ordered at Benkei no weibasho, an izakaya near Niigata Station. This restaurant is operated by a local conveyor-belt sushi chain, and we were informed that their seafood dishes are sure to be good, so we made a reservation and visited. I was curious about this sake at Ponshukan, where I had wandered around during lunch. Niigata is known for its dry sake, but this one is quite fruity. The rice used is Gohyakumangoku and Nihonbare. If I had to describe it in one word, I would say it's "Omnivorous Japanese Sake Partridge". It was a nice homey sake brewery 😊. It was limited to 100 bottles and they were the last 3 bottles. It's shwashy, sweet and sour. It may be a daiginjo, but it doesn't taste like yamahai and is easy to drink.

Back in the day, Niigata's Sanbai was an extremely hard-to-find brand. I often visited Niigata Takata on business and was often presented with it. At the time, I had no interest in sake at all and almost never went through with it. Now, in 2021, Koshino-Kanbai is easily available at Aeon. Mine-no-Hakubai is also often seen as Hishiko at local liquor stores. However, Yukinubai is not so easy to find in my hometown. So, I got it on a business trip to Joetsu. I paired it with a taste of spring, firefly squid and broccoli with olive oil. It has a moderate aroma of cemedine or banana. It is sweet. It harmonizes with the sweetness and bitterness of firefly squid and broccoli. Lastly, there is a final bitter taste that is refreshing and delicious in the mouth!

I have an early summer vacation 😆. I enjoy going on historical trips, and this time I plan to go from Omi Nagahama to Kohoku and enter Kyoto from Saba Kaido (mackerel road).
