The sake I chose when I returned home for Obon was Gold Junmai Daiginjo by Popular Sake Brewery. This sake brewery is very particular about the traditional method of making sake, and everything is made in wooden vats. It is a junmai daiginjo that is polished to 50%, so there is no cloying taste at all ✨It starts with an elegant sweetness and rice flavor, with the aroma of the wooden vat and a slight bitterness at the end. Delicious 😊.

Shizuku-tori sake from my humble favorite, Ikumidoi-san. The aroma is gently fruity. It is berry-like with acidity. The mouthfeel is gentle, but the volume expands with both sweetness and dryness. It has a very beautiful structure with a disappearing aftertaste. A good sake for stand-alone drinking. I think it would also work well as a heated sake, perhaps because of the image of Ikumichii 👌.

It was purchased at the Aichi Sake Caravan during the Handa Canal Marche in Handa City on March 22. Forty brands of sake from breweries in Aichi, Gifu, Mie and Shizuoka were on sale. Attracted by the spring-only offerings, I purchased one of them, a sake from a brewery in Higashiura-cho on the Chita Peninsula. Ikumichii is read as Ikujii. It is dry and has a sharp taste on the nose, but it is mellow and easier to drink than expected. 1,760 yen.

Last weekend, I hung around the town of Shichigahama. We enjoyed the new seaweed festival, and although we did a bit of fishing, the bite was not so good at this time of year with the low tide, so we had a very productive Sunday. We stopped by a liquor store owned by a former junior colleague of mine. The aroma of the top shelf is a rich ginjo aroma. The mouthfeel is dry, as is typical of Kochi sake, but the umami is also present. It has a slight sake-like aftertaste and finishes with a mild acidity and bitterness. I found out that it was Mr. Rika, the toji (master brewer), who was standing in the store at that time😅. I tasted the following Iwami Ginzan Special Junmai Hiyoshi Oroshi Rika Junmai Ginjo Kaihatanryu Ichitunya TANE Nama-zake Yukika Sparkling None of them left much of an impression on me, but I thought the Yukika was as tasty as ever. It was sweet and strong, like a strong calpis soda. I would like to try it again because Sugidama-san in Kyoto sells Iwami Ginzan.
