4+/5 Light, creamy, smooth, and nutty. Coconut cream, butterscotch, cantaloupe, liquorice, walnut. Feels delicate and light-bodied but the flavours are strong. Nicely soft and creamy texture in the mouth. Very nutty finish with slightly bitter aftertaste. Overall pretty dry. Brewed in Hawaii, fun find! I had this last month but had to wait for the brand to be added to the database.

4.25+/5 Butterscotch, coconut meat, honeydew, Asian pear, marzipan, fennel. Delicate flavours, but there’s power and complexity. Slightly sweet, medium-low acidity. Smooth and light with a bit of gentle cream. Nutty bitterness on the finish with a slight bite. I don’t know to what extent aging has affected the flavour. I thought the liquid itself would have a bit of a pink hue, but it’s really just the bottle, a little disappointing. Pink or clear, fresh or old, it’s delicious though!

4.25/5 Also strong and sweet. Sweet and nutty and slightly meaty, chestnut-like. Chocolate-covered blackcurrant, roasted hazelnut, black pepper, honeysuckle. Theres a flavour there that feels very familiar, but I just can’t quite describe. Delicate flavours but bold and complex. Medium sweet but quite strong stuff. This is a very interesting and unique saké that I’m really happy to try as part of this set. However, overall, the original Funaguchi is still my favourite.

4+/5 Strong and sweet with a smooth depth. Big cocoa and walnut flavour with persimmon and raisin. Gentle slightly peppery spice flavours, maybe a hint of ginger and allspice. Really interesting and flavourful, fun to try as part of this three-pack set. The aging gives a slight caramel tint, but I guess this doesn’t count as koshu? If I compare with the regular yellow nama-genshu, I like the original better, but this is still very good in its own right.

3.75+/5 Whopping indeed. Other sparkling sakés I’ve had have all been very light, so this is a big divergence. Probably the strongest sparkling beverage I’ve had, wine included. And yet, despite that strength, light and delicate bubbles. Butterscotch, cantaloupe, Asian pear, candied pecan, burnt caramel. Quite bitter, slightly sweet, faint acidity. I think I like the still version better honestly, the alcoholic strength makes the delicate bubbles hard to appreciate. But still pretty fun!

4+/5 Really nice and light. Lightly sweet and tangy, real clean flavour. Very light but pleasant bubbles. Big honeydew melon with a bit of green apple, and some clean rice flavour. Hint of raw almond on the finish, with very light bitterness as well. Simple but effective!

4/5 Butterscotch, almond, persimmon. Strong but smooth, fairly alcoholic. Light on the fruit, but still a pinch of acidity. Fairly dry, slightly meaty. Some bitterness on the finish. Had this over about two weeks, it smoothed out a bit over time, but kept a distinct bite. Not unpleasant though. I’d prefer a bit more fruitiness, but this was enjoyable. Forgot to post this last month!

4.25/5 Delicate, lightly sweet, hint of acidity, somewhat bitter finish. Persimmon, pear, chocolate, walnut. Light body, delicate flavours, but it packs a punch. Pretty tasty, at first there was a little more bitterness than I’d prefer, but after breathing a little it’s smoothed out quite nicely. Fun little single serving, but I wouldn’t mind a full bottle of this stuff!

4.25/5 Nice with ice! Strong, clean, and slightly creamy. Banana, curaçao, coconut cream, almond paste, butterscotch, Asian pear. Indeed summery, like a pool party—though I could see it working any time of year, honestly. As the ice melts and waters it down the experience changes. Initially it’s full of flavour but a little strong, then it’s quite light and smooth and refreshing. A little more acidity might’ve been nice. I’ve been enjoying this over about two weeks, still really good!

4.25/5 Delicate yet confident, smooth and slightly creamy, delicious. Honeysuckle, cantaloupe, white chocolate, coconut, yellow apple. Fairly light but slightly syrupy. Measured medium-low sweetness. Faint hint of acidity. Smooth but slightly hot on the finish. Great cold on a hot day, but I feel like it would work pretty well in most seasons. I’ve had this open for about a week but wanted to take pictures during the daytime and kept forgetting. Still just as good as when I opened it!

4.25+/5 Surprisingly good stuff! Lightly sweet, quite strong, with a clean finish. Cocoa, pear, banana, almond paste. Fairly sweet up front, a brief hint of tang, and drier by the finish. Slightly syrupy and with a faint creaminess. Big cocoa with gentle fruits. Nutty almost savoury aftertaste. Strong and alcoholic, bitterness throughout, but all the way tempered by the sweetness Day 2: I like it even more, it’s smoother and creamier. I want a whole bottle!

4.25/5 Bright, medium-light, and full of flavour. Cantaloupe, pear, honeysuckle, almond. Big flavourful melon, with a nice light and floral fruitiness. Feels slightly sweet at first, but it’s overall on the dry side, especially once paired with food. The finish is meaty and slightly savoury, but overall refreshing. Went well with a 散らし丼 and 納豆巻.

4.25/5 Good stuff, dry but fruity and smooth with a bit of a tang. Pear, honeydew, almond, ginger, cocoa, coconut. Great fruity flavours, maybe a hint of sweetness, but it’s pretty dry, with a nice medium-low acidity. Slight creaminess, a bit of bitterness, well balanced. Went well with oden and karaage.

4.25/5 Smooth yet strong. Cantaloupe, coconut, pecan, butterscotch, cocoa, stone. Has a lot of sweet flavours, but very little sweetness. It’s quite dry, just a tiny hint. No real discernible acidity. Somewhat strong, light bitterness, slightly thick feeling. Love the contrasts, it’s good with savoury food. I have a feeling this will taste even better in a few days, so I better not drink it all now.

4/5 Nice light-bodied taru. Faint sweetness, with a gentle perfumed bitterness. Honeydew, raw almond, juniper, cedar, stone. The woodsy herbal notes are really nice. There’s the faintest fruitiness, but mainly just a neutral honied sweetness. Bitterness on the finish balances well. Reminds me a little of gin, especially with the junipery note. I like it, but could be a little more smooth. Good with food.

4.25+/5 Fantastic nigori, nice and lightly creamy with delicious tangy fruits. Green apple, green pear, tangerine, cocoa, walnut, milk. Sweet, but lightly sweet, and the acidity is medium-low. It’s fairly light-bodied but with a gentle creamy texture. The flavours are real good and so well balanced. And it’s not what I’d usually expect from a nigori, it’s so far in the other direct from the super sweet and thick and creamy kind. Surprisingly good, really liking this!

Good evening Mr. Wiliam 😃. I've never seen Kurosawa before... it looks delicious 😋 Can you buy it in the U.S. ⁉️ Nagano is a very popular and delicious sake 😊 Nagano is an apple growing area and the sake has an apple flavor 😌.

4+/5 Dry and nicely flavourful. Muscat grape, almond paste, cocoa, coconut, stone. Slightly fruity with a faint creaminess. Hint of sweetness initially, but overall pretty dry. Strong, but easy to drink. Fresh and clean. A little nutty bitterness. This was good and I thoroughly enjoyed it, but apparently some think it’s like amazing stuff. It didn’t blow me away though really, so not sure what I’m missing. Went well with a birthday sushi dinner of a sashimi platter and a natto roll.

3.75+/5 Pleasant dry saké. Indeed it’s pretty dry but it’s not too harsh at all. There’s some nice light butterscotch flavour, a bit of almond paste, and stone. Maybe a little something vaguely fruity, let’s call it persimmon. Whisper of cream. Very clean taste. A bit stronger of a bitter finish than I’d usually like, but it’s pretty good with food. In this case paring well with natto and okra salad with rice. According to their website it’s junmai, but the bottle doesn’t say anything.

4+/5 Was expecting this to be really sweet but it’s actually surprisingly dry. There’s initially some sweetness and a good bit of acidity but it fades quickly to a dry finish. Bright and fruity with a slightly bitter nuttiness. Green apple, lime, honeydew, honey, almond, quinine. There’s an interesting slight fizzy tingling feeling on the tongue. One of the tangiest sakés I’ve yet tried. Pretty fun and loving the festive design!

4.25+/5 Very tasty, light and fun sparkling saké. Fruity and light with good tang. Clean finish. Green pear, green apple, citrus, honey. Real big pear flavour. Medium-light sweetness. Fresh and bright. If I had it blind I might think it was an apple cider or a perry, but a gentle ricy saké flavour comes through in the background. Everything is smooth and works together. Good lower alcohol option, fun bubbles and delicious flavour. Really loving the pear. Happy new year to all! Cheers!
