Yokoyama Sake Brewery, Fukazawa Sake Brewery, Amaraku Sake Brewery, and Baba Sake Brewery merged in 1959 for the purpose of joint bottling and sales. The name "Shotoku" was given by the chief priest of Kanzen Shrine, the first shrine in Jyoshu, in honor of Prince Shotoku's teaching of "Harmonious and Honorable. It's kind of a refreshing sake. All the flavors seem to point in different directions. It is neither sweet nor sour, neither spicy nor bitter, nor is it halfway between the two. The legs are thin, but with a slight yellowish tinge, and are plentiful.

The original brand name was "Shirakiku", which was derived from "white" for the purity of sake and "chrysanthemum" for the aroma of sake, but when the trademark was registered in the Showa period, "Shirakiku" was registered in the Kansai region, and they added a character "Higashi" for sake brewers in the East and named it "Higashi Shirakiku". I finally got to drink some decent sake (まとも,て) from Oyama! Oyama is the parent company of Kitashika, Echigozakura, Yukitsubaki, Kyohime, and Hamafukutsuru, and is the largest sake brewer in eastern Japan. The Oyama Brewery, once the only brewery in the 23 wards of Tokyo (until Tokyo Port Brewing Company was established), is a distant relative of the Oyama Brewery, and the Marushin Masamune brand is said to have been taken over by this company after the company withdrew from the sake business. It has a full-bodied flavor with a hint of sourness. It is rather strong, so it is hard to gobble it down. The top aroma is of grapes and pears with a slight hint of cemedine.
