While known as the only all pure rice brewery in Hiroshima Prefecture, it is also famous as the birthplace of Nikka Whiskey's founder, Masataka Taketsuru.
The origin of the name "Taketsuru" dates back to before 1600, when the Battle of Sekigahara took place. When the head of the brewery saw cranes nesting in the bamboo thicket behind the brewery, he rejoiced and changed his family name to "Chikutsuru" (meaning "crane in a pine tree").
