I traveled to Gunma and Niigata for one night and two days in GW and stopped at a roadside station in Tokamachi City, Niigata Prefecture.
MUJI and the local Matsunoi Sake Brewery jointly produced this sake, which is brewed with Koshihikari rice instead of sake rice. The sake is said to be an effort to add value to the rice produced in the terraced rice paddies in the Matsudai area of Tokamachi City, with the aim of promoting the use of rice and supporting the producers. It has just been on sale since this past GW and I happened to come across it there. It is also sold at 9 MUJI stores nationwide in limited quantities.
It was a delicious sake with a much less acidic taste and was easy to drink, in a good way, without any habits. It is said that rice rice has a smaller heart white than sake rice and has more starch layer on its surface, which causes a tangy taste.
As I said, Niigata's sake is of a high level. There are many sake that I have yet to try, and I am looking forward to encountering new ones.
