Founded in Kumagaya in 1850. Jiro Naozane Kumagai was a warrior and monk active in the Heian and Kamakura periods, and was praised by Yoritomo as "the strongest man in Japan." In the "Tale of the Heike," it is said that he was distressed over his defeat of Taira Atsumori, who was about the age of his own son, and became an ordained priest and apprentice to Honen Shonin.
