The company was founded in 1871 by Hanjuro Shinohara, who was originally the chief priest of Kunitsuhikomikoto Shrine. However, in 1886, a typhoon flooded the nearby river and washed away all the production facilities. The origin of the name "Sakura Uzumaki" is said to have come from "Hachitakeyama," a mountain forest that was famous for its cherry blossoms, and "Uzumaki" was inspired by a newspaper novel of the time and based on the title of the novel.
