Irorian (蕎麦と酒 いろり庵)

moby
In a great summer vacation adventure, two elementary school siblings took the Shinkansen bullet train to their cousin's house for a sleepover. We were able to pick them up safely at Ueno Station, so we decided to take the kids directly to Irorian, located at the Shinkansen exit of the station. It is a station soba restaurant directly operated by JR East, and I recently noticed that they have a surprisingly good selection of Japanese sake. I ordered a glass of "Mimuro Sugi" with grated buckwheat noodles and a story of the children's adventures as a summery side dish. I was told that it was refreshing and easy to drink, and gave the impression of being like a Ramune, and indeed it was. The acidity is not noticeable and quite easy to drink. My personal impression is that it is a bit like brewer's kuheiji (the bitter atmosphere that remains at the end is less in Mimuro-sugi). Sake and soba go well together. It was a dangerous summer evening when I found a pattern that I might fall in love with on my way back from a business trip to Tohoku or Hokuriku.
