In 1697, 24 of the major sake breweries in Itami were allowed to have a surname belt and were designated as "official sake" by the Edo shogunate. Sake shops with a surname belt were called "onsakeya," which meant that they were distinguished from ordinary sake shops and had a high level of prestige. The name of the sake shop was "Onsakeya.
