What is the "Great Tug of War in Kariwano"? The Kariwano Tug-of-War is said to have been handed down from the Muromachi period (1336-1573), more than 500 years ago. It has been held on the night of the 15th day of the first lunar month under a full moon as a small New Year's event. The rope is then dedicated to Ukishima Shrine. It is said that if the upper town wins, the price of rice will increase, and if the lower town wins, there will be a good harvest. Osawago-shuku's "male and female fresh water" is used for brewing and wari water. We were particular about the water used for brewing and for making our wariwari, and searched for fresh water in Nishi-Senboku Town. The local people have long used the water, which they call "male and female" water (oshizu/meshizu), and it has long been said to be the water that prolongs life with a hardness of 18 mg/dehydration.
